CHAPTER 6
Delilah retrieved the satchels Marrok had brought in. Both their valises were with another bag. It was a sack of some sort. The material was coarse and bulky. She untied the leather string and peered inside. She blew out a sigh of relief when she took in the contents. Inside, Marrok had brought a loaf of bread, some cheese, and several apples. He had probably brought along the apples to feed the horse a treat from time to time, but they’d give them something to put in their stomach. Though the duke probably would need something a little lighter to eat. He might not be able to keep much down, being so ill.
She set the bag of treasures aside and went to see if there was anything else she could use to care for Marrok. Since it was a hunting lodge, its supplies were limited. Delilah went through the process of going through drawers and cabinets. So far, she’d found salt, candles, a small can of tea, and a bow with a quiver of arrows. She might be able to use the latter to hunt when the sun came up. Though she was a better shot with a rifle, she did learn to use a bow from one of the gamesman at her family home. She’d had him teach her more out of boredom than anything else. Everything else she learned out of necessity over the years.
If she could manage to shoot a rabbit, squirrel, something…she could make a soup of some sort for Marrok. He’d need broth to eat while he convalesced. In the meantime, she’d gather more wood from the dry storage and keep the fire going through the night. Marrok coughed from time to time, but so far he’d remained asleep. Delilah grabbed a log and put it on the fire in the hearth. More coughing echoed through the cabin. She went over to his side, sat on the settee next to him, and placed her hand on his head. He was burning up.
His eyelids fluttered open, and he met her gaze. His eyes seemed almost glassy and unfocused. “What are you doing?” Marrok’s voice was scratchy and hoarse. “Where am I?”
“Don’t you remember?” She kept her voice soft. “We’re at a hunting lodge.”
Marrok thrashed around the settee and pushed the blanket covering him down his chest. Delilah glanced away. It had been bad enough she’d been forced to undress him. She had done her best not to actually look at him, but it would have been impossible not to catch a glimpse of his gorgeous muscled torso…and other male parts she shouldn’t have seen outside the benefits of marriage.
“Did we…” He shook his head as if trying to brush a thought away. “What happened to my clothes?”
“They were wet,” she told him. Delilah hoped he wouldn’t push for more details. Her cheeks heated at the very idea of explaining to him that she had to undress him. She had never wanted to see any part of him naked.
